Grade 10 Lesson 1: #Banking basics

Lets start the lessons for grade 10 with a brief recap of banks. At the most basic level, banks are like your own personal money butler, here to keep your cash safe and sound, and to offer you all sorts of fancy services.

Now, let's talk about some of the most popular services that banks offer. First on the list is the checking account, also known as a transactional account, which is a type of account that allows you to deposit your money and keep track of your spending. It is used primarily for everyday transactions such as paying bills, shopping and withdrawing cash.

Next up is the savings account, it is a type of account that pays interest on the money that you deposit. The interest rate is usually lower than the interest rate on a checking account, but your money is also less accessible. This account is intended for long-term savings, usually for a specific goal such as buying a house, car or for emergency funds.

And let's not forget about the trusty deposit box, a service provided by banks where you can keep your valuables such as documents, jewelry, and other items safe and secure.

But banks don't just hold onto your money, they also have some pretty cool ways to help you spend it. Credit cards, for example, which is a payment card that allows the holder to borrow money up to a certain limit in order to purchase goods or services. It is a form of revolving credit and the cardholder is required to pay a minimum amount every month.

And when it comes to big purchases, banks can lend you the money, also known as a loan, which is a type of debt that is extended to an individual or business. Banks can lend money for various purposes such as buying a house, car or for business expansion.

Plus, they even offer checks, which is a written order to a financial institution to pay a specific amount to a certain person or entity. They are used for transactions such as paying bills and withdrawing cash from an account.

And lastly, banks offer payments and remittances, which are the process of sending money from one person or entity to another. This can be done through various methods such as online banking, wire transfer, or mobile banking apps.

And that's not all, as we continue on our financial literacy journey we will keep building on these concepts and understanding the various aspects of the banking system.
